Baptism In The Holy Spirit

The Holy Spirit is the third person of the Trinity, and is identified as God (Acts 5:3-4).

The Holy Spirit is clearly identified as a person.

The Holy Spirit knows the things of God  (1 Corinthians 2:10-11)

The Holy Spirit has a mind and will (Romans 8:27, 1 Corinthians 12:11)

The Holy Spirit teaches us and guides us (1 Cor. 2:13, John 16:13)

The Work of the Holy Spirit in the Old Testament

Genesis 1:2, Psalm 104:30, Job 33:4 The Holy Spirit was Involved in creation:

2 Peter 1:21 (examples: 2 Samuel 23: 2, Micah 3:8) The Holy Spirit inspired the scripture writers:

The Holy Spirit came upon (or indwelt) various people for specific purposes: Joseph (Genesis 41:38), Joshua (Numbers 27:18), Othniel (Judges 3:10), Samson (Judges 13:25, 14:6 & 19, 15:14), Saul (1 Samuel 10:10, 11:6), David (1 Samuel 1613), the prophets (Ezekiel 2:2, Daniel 5:11).

(Ex. 31:3, 35:31). The Holy Spirit enabled people to perform particular tasks.

Prophesies and the promise of the Holy Spirits infilling

Your sons and your daughters shall prophesy, Your young men shall see visions, your old men shall dream dreams.

18 And on My menservants and on My maidservants I will pour out My Spirit in those days; And they shall prophesy.

Acts 2 38 Then Peter said to them, "Repent, and let every one of you be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins; and you shall receive the gift of the Holy Spirit. 39 For the promise is to you and to your children, and to all who are afar off, as many as the Lord our God will call."

Acts 16:6 Paul and his companions traveled throughout the region of Phrygia and Galatia, having been kept by the Holy Spirit from preaching the word in the province of Asia.

Acts 19:2 and asked them, “Did you receive the Holy Spirit when you believed?” They answered, “No, we have not even heard that there is a Holy Spirit.”

1 Corinthians 12:10 to another miraculous powers, to another prophecy, to another distinguishing between spirits, to another speaking in different kinds of tongues, or languages; also in verse 28] and to still another the interpretation of tongues.[ 12:10 Or languages; also in verse 28]

1 Corinthians 12:28 And in the church God has appointed first of all apostles, second prophets, third teachers, then workers of miracles, also those having gifts of healing, those able to help others, those with gifts of administration, and those speaking in different kinds of tongues.

1 Corinthians 12:30 Do all have gifts of healing? Do all speak in tongues[ 12:30 Or other languages] ? Do all interpret?

1 Corinthians 13:1 If I speak in the tongues[ 13:1 Or languages] of men and of angels, but have not love, I am only a resounding gong or a clanging cymbal.

1 Corinthians 14:1 Follow the way of love and eagerly desire spiritual gifts, especially the gift of prophecy.

1 Corinthians 14:5 I would like every one of you to speak in tongues,[ 14:5 Or other languages; also in verses 6, 18, 22, 23 and 39] but I would rather have you prophesy. He who prophesies is greater than one who speaks in tongues,[ 14:5 Or other languages; also in verses 6, 18, 22, 23 and 39] unless he interprets, so that the church may be edified.

1 Corinthians 14:6 Now, brothers, if I come to you and speak in tongues, what good will I be to you, unless I bring you some revelation or knowledge or prophecy or word of instruction?

1 Corinthians 14:18 I thank God that I speak in tongues more than all of you.

1 Corinthians 14:22 Tongues, then, are a sign, not for believers but for unbelievers; prophecy, however, is for believers, not for unbelievers.

1 Corinthians 14:23 So if the whole church comes together and everyone speaks in tongues, and some who do not understand[ 14:23 Or some inquirers] or some unbelievers come in, will they not say that you are out of your mind?

1 Corinthians 14:39 Therefore, my brothers, be eager to prophesy, and do not forbid speaking in tongues.

1 Thessalonians 1:5 because our gospel came to you not simply with words, but also with power, with the Holy Spirit and with deep conviction. You know how we lived among you for your sake.

2 Timothy 1:14 Guard the good deposit that was entrusted to you—guard it with the help of the Holy Spirit who lives in us.

Titus 3:5 he saved us, not because of righteous things we had done, but because of his mercy. He saved us through the washing of rebirth and renewal by the Holy Spirit,

Hebrews 9:8  The Holy Spirit was showing by this that the way into the Most Holy Place had not yet been disclosed as long as the first tabernacle was still standing.

1 Peter 1:12 It was revealed to them that they were not serving themselves but you, when they spoke of the things that have now been told you by those who have preached the gospel to you by the Holy Spirit sent from heaven. Even angels long to look into these things.

1 Peter 2:5 you also, like living stones, are being built into a spiritual house to be a holy priesthood, offering spiritual sacrifices acceptable to God through Jesus Christ.

Jude 1:20 But you, dear friends, build yourselves up in your most holy faith and pray in the Holy Spirit.

Work of the Holy Spirit

The Holy Spirit was Involved in creation: Genesis 1:2, Psalm 104:30, Job 33:4

The Holy Spirit inspired the scripture writers: 2 Peter 1:21 2 Samuel 23:2, Micah 3:8)

The Holy Spirit came upon (or indwelt) various people for specific purposes: Joseph (Genesis 41:38), Joshua (Numbers 27:18), Othniel (Judges 3:10), Samson (Judges 13:25, 14:6 & 19, 15:14), Saul (1 Samuel 10:10, 11:6), David (1 Samuel 1613), the prophets (Ezekiel 2:2, Daniel 5:11).

The Holy Spirit enabled people to perform particular tasks. (Ex. 31:3, 35:31).

Work of the Spirit in Salvation

The Holy Spirit convicts the world of sin, righteousness, and judgment (John 16:8).

The Holy Spirit imparts God’s supernatural act of imparting eternal life (Titus 3:5).

The Holy Spirit causes us to be Sanctified: (Sanctify" means to be set apart, or declared holy), for God’s use and service. We are presently being saved through the sanctifying work of the Spirit (2 Thessalonians 2:13, 1 Peter 1:2), resulting in our moral and spiritual improvement as we become more Christ-like

The Holy Spirit indwells  every believer  (1 Cor. 3:16, 6:19, John 14:16-17,  Acts 2:38, Romans 8:9-11),

The Holy Spirit seals every believer (2 Cor. 1:22, Ephesians 1:13, 4:30). We have been given the Holy Spirit as a seal of God’s pledge to us that we shall inherit eternal life.

Speaking in Tongues in The Congregation

1 Corinthians 12:10 Believers who have received the gift of ‘different kinds of tongues’, which are used by God to speak to the church.  The Spirit of God speaks in tongues, which are then interpreted by someone with the gift of interpretation of tongues so that the church can understand and be built up and encouraged. The -office gift of tongues is a different operation of tongues. The gift of tongues spoken to the church must be interpreted and should edify the body of believers..

1 Corinthians 14:28 “If there is no interpreter, the speaker should keep quiet in the church and speak to himself and God”  Our personal prayer language is when a believer speaks in tongues to himself and God as described in this verse not needing an interpretation. However there are many instances where you may ask God for the interpretation and you will receive it to your own edification. Your prayer language is different from the (church-office spiritual gift of tongues). Everyone who is baptized in the Holy Spirit with the evidence of tongues may use there prayer language at will, praying in the Spirit to God.

Holy Spirit Baptism By Jesus.

Jn.15:26. The New Testament believers understood that receiving the Holy Spirit is an experience which comes AFTER salvation.

John 20:19-22  On the evening of that first day of the week, when the disciples were together, with the doors locked for fear of the Jews, Jesus came and stood among them and said, "Peace be with you!" After he said this, he showed them his hands and side. The disciples were overjoyed when they saw the Lord. Again Jesus said, "Peace be with you! As the Father has sent me, I am sending you." And with that he breathed on them and said, “Receive the Holy Spirit.”

Jesus Taught  that the world (sinners) CAN NOT RECEIVE the Counselor, the Holy Spirit. The Spirit of Truth. The world cannot accept him, because it neither sees him, nor knows him. Jn. 14:17. Jesus was speaking of being BAPTISED in the Holy Spirit, NOT being born again. The Counselor, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name (at Pentecost) will teach you all things.

Acts 8 shows 'receiving the Holy Spirit', and being 'filled with', or 'baptized with the Holy Spirit' came after being born again. The Samarian’s had accepted the word of God, they sent Peter and John to them. When they arrived, they prayed for them that they might receive the Holy Spirit, because the Holy Spirit had not yet come upon any of them; they had simply been baptized into the name of the lord Jesus Christ. Then peter and john placed their hands on them and they received the Holy Spirit. Acts 8:5, 12,14-17 the Samaritans were saved before Peter and John came. Peter defines salvation in 1 Pe. 1:23. For you were born again, not of perishable seed, but of imperishable, through the living and enduring word of god.  Verse 12 of acts 8 states the Samaritans had believed and been Baptised (in water). Verse 14 shows they'd received the Word of God.

Purpose of the Holy Spirit Baptism.

(Acts 13:52). Being filled with the Spirit empowers us to do God’s work and experience God’s joy

John 14:26 But the Counselor, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, will teach you all things and will remind you of everything I have said to you.

John 15:26 "When the Counselor comes, whom I will send to you from the Father, the Spirit of truth who goes out from the Father, he will testify about me.

Acts 1:8 But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you; and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth."

Romans 8:26-27 In the same way, the Spirit helps us in our weakness. We do not know what we ought to pray for, but the Spirit himself intercedes for us with groans that words cannot express. And he who searches our hearts knows the mind of the Spirit, because the Spirit intercedes for the saints in accordance with God's will.

1 Corinthians 12:10 Tongues are a special spiritual gift, given by God

1 Corinthians 14:2 For anyone who speaks in a tongue does not speak to men but to God. Indeed, no one understands him; he utters mysteries with his spirit.

1 Corinthians 14:4 He who speaks in a tongue edifies himself…

1 Corinthians 14:5 Apostle Paul’s desire: ‘I would like every one of you to speak in tongues’

1 Corinthians 14:14 For if I pray in a tongue, my spirit prays, but my mind is unfruitful…

1 Corinthians 14:15 So what shall I do? I will pray with my spirit, but I will also pray with my mind; I will sing with my spirit, but I will also sing with my mind.

1 Corinthians 14:16 praising God with your spirit…

1 Corinthians 14:17 giving thanks…

1 Corinthians 14:19“ But in the church I would rather speak five intelligible words to instruct others than ten thousand words in a tongue.”

1 Corinthians 14:39 Do not forbid speaking in tongues…

Ephesians 6:18 “And pray in the Spirit on all occasions with all kinds of prayers and requests.”

Jude 1:20  “But you, dear friends, build yourselves up in your most holy faith and pray in the Holy Spirit.”

Believers at Ephesus: Acts 19:1-6 While Apollos was at Corinth, Paul took the road through the interior and arrived at Ephesus. There he found some disciples and asked them, "Did you receive the Holy Spirit when you believed?" They answered, "No, we have not even heard that there is a Holy Spirit." So Paul asked, "Then what baptism did you receive?" "John's baptism," they replied. Paul said, "John's baptism was a baptism of repentance. He told the people to believe in the one coming after him, that is, in Jesus." On hearing this, they were baptized into the name of the Lord Jesus. When Paul placed his hands on them, the Holy Spirit came on them, and they spoke in tongues and prophesied. Being filled with the Spirit empowers us to do God’s work

(Acts 13:52).Being filled with the Spirit is an ongoing process, experienced repeatedly, not just once. In Ephesians 5:18-21 we are told to "be filled with the Spirit" (the Greek verb is a present continuous imperative which literally means "keep on being filled").

Summary

Acts 1:8 and Lk. 24:49 Jesus Promised His disciples; I am going to send you what my Father has promised; but stay in the city until you have been clothed with power from on high. You will receive POWER when the Holy Spirit comes on you, and you will be my witnesses ... To the ends of the earth..

Joel 2:28-29   God had previously promised through the Prophet Joel, a future time when; I will pour out my Spirit on all people. Your sons and daughters will prophesy ... Even on my servants, both men and women, I will pour out my Spirit in those days. All of them were filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other tongues as the Spirit enabled them.

Acts 2:4 the previously timid disciples were transformed into fearless proclaims of the Gospel of Jesus Christ.

Joel 2:28-32, Immediately, the Holy Spirit through Peter confirmed that this was the fulfillment of Joel's prophecy. This is what was spoken by the Prophet Joel what you now see and hear. Acts 2:39. This is what was spoken of ... Acts 2:16 For they heard them speaking in tongues and praising God.

Prayer tongues are a beautiful language of prayer, praise and thanksgiving to God, spoken from the spirit to God. When a person prays in tongues, their spirit is praying directly to God, speaking mysteries of praise.

Praise and thanksgiving to God confuse Satan, and tongues even more so.
